What does an Artistic Director do, and why does it entail packing? A lot of packing?
As Artistic Director of The Chimera Project, it’s my job to create the vision that drives the company forward. The Chimera Project is a Toronto based contemporary dance company recognized for virtuosic athletics and an edgy, urban aesthetic.
Running in and out of rehearsals daily, throughout various venues and showcasing works with a cast ranging from 4 to 12 dancers means that my bags are full of things in flux - clean clothing, sweaty clothing. Folded things, things meshed up in every way imaginable.
"At least", I thought, "if I could manage to keep my shoes separate from clean things in my bag, that would make a difference in my life.”
So I got the Go Clean Shoe bag, and it was wonderful.
This launched a small and harmless love affair with keeping things separate, which soon included the Go Clean boots bag, Go Clean Wet Suit, and many more. Each one has a story of disaster preceding it, which initiated the purchase. Yes, I did get half of my suitcase contents wet from a bathing suit flying back from shows in Sault Ste. Marie. Yes, I did get sand all over my clean clothing with dirty boots. Issues solved with Go Clean.
The collection of useful things expanded to include the seat pack, sitting next to me right now on a train to Windsor, Ontario which has all my travel and rehearsal necessities which are almost the same - chargers, headphones, keys, small things I always forget. I also always use the Go Clean orange “laundry” bag inside our change rooms for dancers’ costumes after performances.
All these lovely things are solidly integrated into my everyday life, which is far more organized. Now I just need to figure out how to make it less hectic.
